WATCH THE FEET™ Short Film 06:08 min. 2021
Laura Tufariello, Sashko Danylenko

My name is LC, it is pronounced Elsie, and it stands for Life Cycle

and in just a few minutes, I will show you how to consider a products’ entire life cycle to make your actions speak louder than your words. ︎

Laura Tufariello

Most consumers want to do the right thing to help keep our planet healthy. They don't always realize that every item, even if it is labeled recycled, recyclable, biodegradable green, etc, is still taking resources from the earth and leaving behind some toxins.
In just a few minutes, the character LC will explain how to make your actions speak louder (and make a bigger impact) than your words.Information in the video is based on actual extensive Life Cycle Assessments done by governmental environmental agencies. (See a few references below)

This video is not promoting the use of plastic bags over paper bags. Our goal is to let you know that everything you use or do has a footprint that may be affecting our planet in negative ways.

Some processes and materials are better than others at each of the life cycle stages. Try to use the least harmful processes and materials. Keep in mind that when you are making decisions based on only one stage of the life cycle there may be other stages that are still having a big impact and making a large footprint. Remember there are 5 stages and at each stage, you may be depleting resources from the planet, and adding toxins or pollutants to our environment.

A healthy economy is important. We make our living and provide for ourselves and our families with the exchange of goods & services. Watching our footprints can still maintain a prosperous economy for all by shifting our thinking from thoughtless disposable consumption to creating a demand for quality items that have smaller footprints and longer lives.

Journey to Zero Waste: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Kick off the Earth Optimism × Folklife Studio sessions with a discussion about the creative ways we are changing waste. One leader has written a book on zero waste, while another designs models for how festivals like the Folklife Festival recover resources and reduce waste. We'll hear from a creative designer working with the global maker movement, which encourages the recycling of all types of materials and a changemaker in the fabrics and fashion sector, working to extend the life cycle of our apparel. This conversation will also visit the issues of urban trash and how U.S. college campuses are mobilizing themselves to lead us toward zero waste.
